Q.I've heard that Mondays are the worst because that's usually when their sales quotas are reset. Does time of day matter? Also, will they be more keen to get rid of stock by the end of financial year? (or perhaps at the very start of the next one) Best to hide the trade-in around the corner until I find something I like and agree on a firm price?

A.The only time ever to buy a used car from a dealer is at the receiver's auction. The weather's far more important. If it's stinking hot or freezing cold there'll be a lot less bidders, but beware of wet days which always make the shit heaps look better. Particularly if it's in the middle of recession.... for which you might need to wait for a change of government. Much better to remove the ID and let the council tow it away if you can't find a cash buyer. If you trade it in, the dealer will actually charge you to take it off your hands (it's already factored into their pricing).
