Buy Used Car TaxQ.I'm looking to buy a used car, and am wondering about buying it in another state and driving it here. My thinking is this: A used car in, say, Arizona, will be rust-free. A used car in Minnesota will already be starting to rust away. Has anyone done this? Any advice? A.You'll need to get a temporary permit from whatever state you pick up the car in so you can drive it home. When you get home, you need to get a Minnesota title and license plate. You'll need to pay sales tax in Minnesota, not Arizona or whatever. If you have a car shipped here instead of driving it here, you shouldn't have to worry about a temporary permit, because you can get a license plate on the spot at a registrar. There are local dealers that buy used cars at auction from southern states and have them shipped here. They do this for the very reason you want a southern car. These cars tend to be late model cars because there isn't enough margin in an older car to ship it half way across the country. Some states will insist on collecting the state sales tax, and then transfer that money to Minnesota. When you regiester it in MN, you will have to pay the sales tax unless you can show that you paid it on the other end.
