Local Used Cars For Sale

Q.We are negotiating for a new Adventurer and the dealer wants $890 for PDI. I thought it would be included or nominal. What is typical on new coaches ???

A.I bought a used car recently. During negotiations they wanted to add about $150 in "administrative fees". I said I would not pay it. I compared it to a restaurant adding a "bill processing fee" onto the price in the menu. And it disappeared. Bargaining was further helped when I pulled the "used cars for sale" weekly mag out of my bag and said I'd go to a local restaurant and read it [I hadn't opened it yet, having bought it from the variety store on the corner] and consider whether I would increase my offer. In used car sales they know if a potential sale walks out the door they are likely to loose the sale. So the original offer I made is the one they accepted. No extra charges other than government taxes. The next day I pick up the car and they give me a key. Drive home and try to open the trunk with the key. Doesn't work. Then I realize I had the "valet key" and that there should be a second key. Went to the dealership. At first they said "We gave you a key, you can open the trunk from the drivers seat". I hit the roof. Then they suddenly agree to phone Toyota and get the key ID. Next day I pick up the key. I still boil when I think about their initial response. Bottom line. Don't agree to any extra charges they start to load on. Get their final price and make it clear you are shopping around. Various people on this newsgroup have been very successful in using the technique of deciding on model and options, sending a fax to all the dealers within a days drive, and letting the dealers compete for their business.
