Used Car Albany New York

Q.I am the proud owner of a 97 Legacy wagon and the not so proud owner of a 90 pontiac grand am. I am looking to replace the grand am and would love to get another Suby. However, in looking at used car prices in this area (Albany, NY), it seems that early 90 legacy's with decent mileage on them are quite expensive ($4-5K) for what you get. For the same price, I can get a used Saab of the same vintage. My question is this - how do the 2 cars compare as far as reliability, durability, safety, winter driving, etc. My Legacy has been flawless in the snow with Guardex snow tires, and no major mechanical problems in 65K other than routine maintenance. People I have talked to about Saabs also rave about their snow capabilities (with good tires of course), and durability/reliability, and safety features (poor man's volvo). This car will be my commuter (about 30 hwy miles daily), and I would prefer a standard tranny. can anyone in the group help me please? I'm just trying to get a feel for how the 2 cars compare on a subjective basis.

A.as someone who actually has owned both makes of cars, I think I can offer you an unbiased opinion on the Saab. Since I own a Subaru now, as do you, I think I can skip the Subie commentary, to save bandwidth The Saab is great if you like interesting little toys on your car, like heated seats, etc. (I sure did!!), but, you really need to keep on top of your maintainance. Parts are not cheap. But they will run and run and run. They're workhorses, albeit small ones. Mine lasted me 120k+ before some clown hit it and totalled it. I assure you, it was one HELL of a crash, that would have killed a person driving a lesser car. (the offending driver hit the Saab at about 80 mph, sending it spinning around and into the nearby woods) My husband, who was driving the Saab that day, suffered only minor bruises and soreness after walking away from the accident. Saab paint jobs are _excellent_. I had bought the Saab brand new in '92, and the paint didn't look too bad 7 years later..of course, that changed after it was hit.. Overall, my only complaint with the Saab was it's electrical wiring harnesses..I had several of them go over the years, and for totally stupid reasons. The wiring harness responsible for lighting up the gear selector (yes, it was an automatic, hubby insisted!!) was too small (crummy design) and so it would only stretch and hold for so long. I finally refused to pay for replacements, so, we both got used to shifting in the dark. Another wiring harness went after fan blades caught it and snapped it. Again, it turned out to be a design issue, so, after hemming and hawing with Saab, we had the new one placed "out of the line of fire", so to speak.
